Precisely How To Read The News As A Truth Checker

news

There is so much news on the internet that it is difficult to distinguish between fake information, propaganda, biased stories, or credible news berita terbaru indonesia. Internet misinformation is spreading quickly, including fake news about candidates for political office that are designed to influence voters and influence elections. Also, anti-vaccine conspiracy theories have spread, which can influence the health of children.

As the United States approaches 2020, students need to be able to evaluate the quality of news articles and ads. Learning to read laterally is a key media literacy method that will assist students to determine the credibility of the online media sources.

Experiment with Vertical Reading

Students will be required to read vertically and analyze two articles based on information accessible on the websites of two organisations. They will then be required to reevaluate the articles by using the lateral reading.

Once students have finished the initial round of assessments Ask a student of each group to share the findings of their group to the class. Students should know that they performed the vertical reading portion of this assessment. They read the pages of the organisations.

Inform the students that they will be able to review the pages twice. For this task, they should take five minutes to review the information found in these two articles and on the web pages of the Academy of Pediatrics and the College of Pediatrics. Next, students will choose the article that they believe is more trustworthy. Students should not go to other websites to read about the Academy of Pediatrics or the College of Pediatricians.

Experiment with Lateral Reading

Students should do a second round five minutes of evaluations in similar groups as the first exercise. The students should now be able to get more about the institutions that published the original articles on other websites.

They should answer these questions in groups:

What information new have you discovered by looking at other websites.

Which sites were the most useful to you?

What can this information help to alter or reinforce conclusions drawn in the initial round of interviews?

Which do you consider more trustworthy?

Once students have finished the second round of evaluations Ask a student of each group to share their group's findings to the class. Explain to students that they did an lateral read because they had access to information about the organizations on the internet. The information they read about on other websites can help students learn about the credibility of the work of these organizations or any biases they might have.

Extension: Practice on the News

Have your students bring in online news stories or research studies they see on their feeds on social media, or elsewhere online. Practice reading the news story in a later time as a class to learn more about the person who wrote it and the level of credibility it had.
